Speaking on Fox and Friends Tuesday, Sen. Pat Toomey, R-Pa., said the Joint Select Committee on Deficit Reduction should consider reforming the tax code if it is “serious about growth.”
Toomey is a tea party-backed member of the super committee tasked with cutting the national deficit.
“Let me just say that tax reform is something the committee would be empowered to consider,” Toomey said. He said the current tax code is a “disaster,” and he wants to decrease loopholes and simplify the code.
President Obama also suggested reforming the tax code in his own deficit proposal that he wants the committee to consider. The president’s plan, however, would involve GOP-opposed ideas like the Buffett rule that would prohibit millionaires from paying a lower tax rate than middle-class Americans. Toomey’s party has called such proposals “class warfare.”
“The president’s been in campaign mode for some time now,” Toomey said. “His so-called ‘jobs plan’ is not a jobs plan, it’s a campaign speech.”
