HART’S LOCATION, N.H. — The smallest town in New Hampshire — with 29 registered voters — concluded balloting in the nation’s first primary within 3 minutes after midnight Tuesday.
Ten of the town’s registered Democrats supported President Barack Obama.
On the Republican side, the votes were split: 5 for former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, 4 for Texas Rep. Ron Paul, 2 for former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman, and 1 each for former House Speaker Newt Gingrich and Texas Gov. Rick Perry.
No one voted for former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum.
Six of the town’s registered voters did not participate in the primary.
Voting took place at the town hall, continuing a tradition that has been in place since 1996.
Mark Dindorf, chairman of the Board of Selectmen, said his community enjoys a “friendly competition” with Dixville Notch, N.H., for being the first polls to announce their results.
Voters ranged in age from 83 — Selectman George Holmes — to Mr. Dindorf’s daughter, Aslyn, who is 19 and was participating in her first election.
“We have a lot of fun and it means a lot,” Mr. Holmes said. “Plus we have cookies and coffee.”
