-- Rep.
Charles Rangel has donated to many Democratic colleagues' re-election campaigns. In light of his recent ethics violations and prodding from Republican partisans, some have decided to return the money.
But so far no one from
Pennsylvania, including Rep. Patrick Murphy of
Bucks County, has said anything about returning it.
Local Reps.
Tim Holden and Paul Kanjorski also have received Rangel money. So has Rep. Joe Sestak, who's running for the Senate.
Unlike the others, Murphy was among those
Democrats who called for Rangel to leave his post at the helm of the tax-writing Ways and Means Committee. Randel did that Wednesday morning. Murphy's call came about the same time Rangel acted, but Murphy's office said he had made his decision the previous evening.
Rangel donated $19,000 to Murphy, mostly to his 2008 re-election campaign. Murphy's spokeswoman refused to comment on whether Murphy would return that money, saying only that Murphy made a decision in early 2009 not to accept any more money from Rangel for this election cycle.
Republicans at the federal and state level are asking Murphy to return Rangel's ''dirty money.''
''Despite his conveniently released statement, the longer Congressman Patrick Murphy keeps Charlie Rangel's 'dirty money,' the longer he publicly condones his corrupt behavior,'' Pennsylvania Republican Party Chairman Rob Gleason said in a statement. ''The people of Pennsylvania deserve leaders who don't need to be told when to take an ethical stand.''
