Corbett’s Education Vision Includes Clear School Grading System

Under Republican Gov.-elect Tom Corbett’s vision for education reform, Pennsylvania schools would be graded “A through F” so parents can clearly gauge how well their children’s schools are performing.It is an integral part of Corbett’s plan for school choice. Students attending schools graded “F” would be in line for tuition vouchers to attend the public, private or parochial school of their choice. Long range, he would like to make the vouchers available to other students.

“We haven’t realized that more money (for education) hasn’t produced better results,” he told a gathering of 400 business and political leaders attending a Pennsylvania Manufacturer Association seminar Saturday. It is part of the Pennsylvania Society weekend here, an annual gathering of Pennsylvania’s premier power elite.

There are programs that attempt to rate schools, “but you read them, and you can’t figure them out,” Corbett told reporters after the event. He said he wants a clear measure for parents about school performance.
