Congressman Cartwright flip-flops on need for border security

On a Fox News appearance Wednesday, Congressman Matt Cartwright—a member of Nancy Pelosi’s Democratic leadership team—did a complete flip-flop on the need for border security at our southern border.

During his reelection campaign, Congressman Cartwright called for strict border security, even supporting the building of the wall.

Here is what he told the Wilkes-Barre Times Leader in a October 10, 2018 story:

“We have to secure our borders. There should be heavy fines and stricter penalties for offenders. I also favor building a wall where appropriate, but not where mountain goats can’t climb.”

However, yesterday on Fox News, the newly-reelected Cartwright is propagating Democrat talking points calling the President’s quest for a secure southern border a quest to “fulfill some political stump speech.”

In response, Republican Party of Pennsylvania Communications Director Jason Gottesman, made the following statement:

“Congressman Matt Cartwright is turning his back on the people of northeastern Pennsylvania by flip-flopping on his campaign-season immigration positions and no longer supporting border security, including the building of a border wall.

“Congressman Cartwright apparently only thinks it appropriate to say what is convenient to who he is pandering to, saying one thing to his constituents and another thing to Nancy Pelosi and the Democratic base.

“The Republican Party of Pennsylvania will make sure voters remember Congressman Cartwright’s true position on border security and immigration in 2020.”
